The introduction of brown trout into North American waters began in 1883. Genetics from brown trout originating in Scotland, England, and Germany intermingled to produce the unique spots and color patterns, which are distinctive to each individual trout. These three European subspecies joined together to create our unique Montana Brown Trout. This self-sustaining wild brown quickly flourished in lakes and rivers across Montana. They are the toughest of our trout species.
Brown trout are a favorite sport fish for both experienced anglers and beginners. Generally, the largest browns are caught on streamers. However, several giant browns who have graced our nets were hooked on a dry-fly. Browns are most frequently hunted by spot and stalk or sight fishing. There is nothing more exciting than watching a brown trout come out from the depths of the water to take your fly. We typically fish for browns with a five, six, or seven weight fly rod.
