Carp are native to Asia, and were introduced to Montana waters around one hundred years ago. They prefer slower moving waters such as lakes or large rivers, and tolerate murky and poorly oxygenated waters well.
We spot and stalk carp feeding on the surface. When carp feed on the surface, their eating habits are much like that of a trout. This style of carp fishing is not for novice anglers. In many chases, long casts and a precise presentation are required to entice carp to eat. It is similar to flats saltwater fishing. Carp fight extremely hard and can grow to be giants in some if the waters we fish, resulting in an epic battle between man and fish.
The average carp is around eight pounds, but we have areas that produce carp over thirty pounds. At least an eight weight fly rod is recommended.
