Montana cutthroat trout are a native trout species and have the second largest historic range of North American trout. Lake trout have the largest range. Cutthroat primarily feed on aquatic insects and adult forms of terrestrials. Population densities of cutthroat decreased over the last century through introduction of other trout species and non-native invasive fish. Despite these challenges, cutthroat populations hold strong in the coldest of streams, rivers, and headwaters.
Cutthroat are a great sporting fish to target. They prefer eating insects off the surface, so dry fly fish is the only way to fish for this beautifully colored survivor. We generally fish a four, five or six weight fly rod, depending on the cutthroat size targeted and water volume.
