The Blackfoot river is a classic Montana fly fishing river. It is sometimes called the Big Blackfoot River to distinguish it from the Little Blackfoot River of Powell County, MT. The Blackfoot begins in Lewis and Clark County at the Continental Divide. It flows westward through the town of Milltown, where it joins the Clark Fork river five miles east of Missoula.
The Blackfoot was featured in the 1976 novel “A River Runs Through It” by Norman Maclean and the 1992 movie of the same title, directed by Robert Redford. As a result, it is one of the most famous stretches of water in the world.
The Blackfoot is a snow and spring-fed river, with deep pools lined by large boulders and rocky cliffs. Consequently, the Blackfoot river contains prime habitat for large Brown, Rainbow, and Bull Trout.
Brown trout start looking up for surface streamers, Salmon flies, and Golden stones in early June. The Blackfoot river fly fishing remains excellent through the first part of July.
