Fort Peck reservoir is nearly 300 miles downstream of the famed Missouri river trout fishery of Craig, Montana. The river takes a turn east, where it enters the badlands of northeastern Montana. It is the 5th largest reservoir in the United States, with a shoreline twice that of California’s Pacific coastline. The lake winds through the badlands portion of northeastern Montana. It is the best northern lake in the United States and one of the best in all of North America. Fishing at Fort Peck offers an unparalleled opportunity to land monster fish.
From lake trout to northern pike, small mouth, walleye, and carp: due to the introduction of a minnow called “cisco” from Saskatchewan in 1984, all fish species in the Fort Peck reservoir grow to be giants. Cisco grow large, rapidly, are high in fat and oils, and are numerous throughout the lake.
Fort Peck offers multiple opportunities for fly fishing and ultralight tackle. Adding to its nostalgia, huge brown and rainbow trout can also be found nearby.
Fort Peck is often referred to as the “wild west” of fishing due to a lack of pressure attributed to both its vast size and location far off the beaten path. Fort Peck Reservoir is the favorite fishery of Jason Morrison Outfitters and produces, hands down, the best sport fishing and most unique overall fishing experience of any river system in Montana and arguably all of North America.
