Land of the Giants Fly fishing Guide

Land of the Giants Fly Fishing Guide

Land of the Giants fly fishing guide by JMO service is based on Montana’s Missouri River, but we run trips across the state’s most productive rivers, lakes, and hidden waters. While Land of the Giants is our home water, we also fish legendary destinations and remote backcountry fisheries—always chasing trophy trout and tailoring each day for serious anglers and first-timers alike.

Species We Target

Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout,  Rainbow Trout, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Lake Trout

Land of the Giants is a legendary stretch of the Missouri River below Holter Dam in central Montana, where cold, stable flows and nutrient-rich tailwater create one of the most productive trout environments in the West. This section of river is wide, clear, and powerful, with long seams, deep runs, and expansive flats that hold extraordinary numbers of large trout. It draws anglers from around the world who come specifically for the chance to fish a place built for big fish and technical fly fishing.

The river is fished primarily with nymphs, dry flies, and streamers, depending on season and conditions, with much of the water accessed by boat to cover its long, productive runs. Sight fishing to large, feeding trout is common in the clear tailwater flows, and the fish here are known for being both powerful and selective. A day on this stretch is defined by steady action, technical presentations, and the constant possibility of encountering a truly oversized trout.

The fishery is dominated by brown and rainbow trout, with exceptionally high populations of fish in the 18–24 inch range and regular opportunities for trout well beyond that, including some of Montana’s largest and most powerful trout. This stretch of the Missouri has produced countless fish over 25 inches and remains one of the most well-documented big-trout waters in North America, making it a true destination for anglers chasing elite-class fish.

Land of the Giants is supremely unique for several reasons. It operates as a private marina that limits the number of guides, preserving low pressure and exceptional water quality. It is essentially a large lake that contains a flowing river within it, creating a massive sanctuary where multiple species can grow to true “giant” size. In addition to its world-class trout fishing, the system also supports excellent seasonal walleye, perch, and northern pike fisheries, further adding to the diversity and productivity of this one-of-a-kind waterway.

Equipment includes fly rods, spinning tackle, and baitcasting gear depending on the water, target species, and preferred style of fishing, with setups matched to the conditions of each fishery. Fishing is done from a power drifter in the river portion or an Xpress X21 bay boat on the lake, as well as on foot through wade-fished stretches of river, depending on the water being fished. A valid Montana fishing license is required and can be obtained online through Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks or at local license vendors throughout the state. Guests should dress for variable Montana weather, with layered clothing recommended throughout the season. Lunch is provided during full-day trips, allowing you to relax, refuel, and enjoy the pace of the day on the water.
