Secret Waters Fly Fishing Guide

Secret Waters Fly Fishing Guide

Secret Waters fly fishing guide by JMO service targets Montana’s lesser-known backcountry fisheries—small rivers, spring creeks, and tucked-away lakes that don’t show up on most itineraries. While Land of the Giants is our home water, we fish legendary destinations and remote backcountry fisheries—always chasing trophy trout and tailoring each day for serious anglers and first-timers alike.

All Species We Target

Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout,  Rainbow Trout, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Kokane Salmon

Secret Waters are the kind of places Montana still does better than almost anywhere else. Tucked behind cottonwood bottoms, rimrock cuts, and backroad valleys, these are small and overlooked fisheries where access isn’t obvious and pressure stays low. Some are spring creeks that run clear all summer. Others are beaver-pond chains hidden in the timber, side-channels that only come alive at the right flow, or stillwater basins that turn on hard when the wind hits just right. In addition, what they all share is something that bigger and more famous waters rarely offer — quiet banks, wild edges, and the feeling that you are fishing something that doesn’t need a name to be special.

As a result, anglers who want solitude, discovery, and fishing that feels genuinely personal come here for exactly that. This is built for stealth, timing, and the reward of figuring something out on your own terms. There is simply nothing quite like it.

How We Fish It –

We fish dry flies, small nymphs, streamers, and stillwater tactics depending on what the specific water is and how the fish are feeding that day. Most of these places are approached on foot and with patience, since stealth and a clean first cast matter more here than anywhere else. However, we match our entire approach to the water in front of us — nothing is assumed in advance.

The best days come from paying attention to details. For example, sun angle, wind direction, tiny hatches, cruising lanes, and how fish use cover when there isn’t much current to hide them all become critical. These fish are wild and unpredictable. Therefore, a day on Secret Waters is defined by moving slowly, making clean presentations, and staying ready — because the whole thing can hinge on a single shoreline, one hatch, or a feeding window that comes and goes fast.

The Fish –

Wild trout dominate many of these waters — cutthroat, rainbows, browns, and brookies depending on where we are. Other spots hold warmwater species like bass and pike. Moreover, these fish are not programmed like tailwater trout and do not behave like predictable river fish. Some are opportunistic, some are highly selective, and most are shaped by low pressure and natural food. Consequently, every fish feels earned in a way that stocked or heavily pressured water simply cannot replicate.

In short, if you want wild fish in their truest form and fishing that feels like you are in on something, this is exactly what Secret Waters deliver. Indeed, nothing else compares.

What Makes Secret Waters Different –

These fisheries are unlike anything else in Montana. Here is why.

  • First, they are defined more by conditions than by reputation. As a result, they carry a powerful seasonal rhythm that shapes everything from water clarity to access to when the fish actually show themselves.
  • Additionally, these waters span multiple landscapes and types. This means one secret spot can fish like a technical spring creek while another is pure stillwater hunting or a short freestone pocket that only exists for a few weeks out of the year.
  • Finally, beyond the main target species, these places often hold unexpected variety — bonus fish, strange mixes, and little micro-fisheries that feel like their own worlds. In other words, the surprises are part of what keeps people coming back.

Gear and Logistics –

We match gear entirely to the water and target species. For instance, fly rods, spinning tackle, and baitcasting setups are all available depending on what we are fishing and how we are approaching it.

Access varies by location — some waters are reached entirely on foot, while others may require a short boat run or a drive down a backroad. We provide fly rods, all your flies, and essential gear including leaders, tippet, and everything else you need on the water. Just show up ready to fish — we handle the rest.
