Missouri River Fly Fishing Guide

Missouri River Fly Fishing Guide

Missouri River fly fishing guide by JMO service is based on Montana’s Missouri River, but we run trips across the state’s most productive rivers, lakes, and hidden waters. While Land of the Giants is our home water, we fish legendary destinations and remote backcountry fisheries—always chasing trophy trout and tailoring each day for serious anglers and first-timers alike.

All Species We Target

Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout,  Rainbow Trout, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Kokane Salmon

The Missouri River in central Montana is one of the most famous tailwaters in the West, flowing cold and clear below Holter Dam where stable releases and constant food supply create an exceptionally productive trout environment. This section of river is broad and technical, with long slicks, defined seams, and steady runs that hold large numbers of trout across miles of consistent habitat. It draws anglers from around the world who come specifically for high-quality fly fishing, reliable conditions, and the kind of water that rewards precision.

The river is fished primarily with nymphs, dry flies, and streamers depending on season and conditions, and much of the best water is covered by boat to work long stretches efficiently. Sight fishing is common in the clear flows, especially in softer edges and shallow flats where trout feed comfortably and move with purpose. A day on this river is defined by steady opportunities, technical presentations, and the constant need to match depth, drift, and timing when the fish are selective.

The fishery is dominated by brown and rainbow trout, with plenty of fish in the 16–20 inch range and real chances at larger trout that show up regularly throughout the season. While not every day is about giant fish, this river consistently produces strong, healthy trout and enough bigger fish to keep every run feeling important. It remains one of the most well-documented trout fisheries in North America, making it a true destination for anglers who want a high-volume, high-skill tailwater experience.

The Missouri is supremely unique for several reasons. Its tailwater stability creates long seasons, consistent water clarity, and predictable feeding cycles that allow trout to grow well and feed often. It is also a river with a deep guide culture and a proven reputation, so there is a clear rhythm to how it’s fished and a long history behind the techniques that work here. In addition to trout, the broader system can support other species in connected waters and reservoirs, which adds range to the overall fishery even though the main draw remains its world-class tailwater trout fishing.

Equipment includes fly rods, spinning tackle, and baitcasting gear depending on the water, target species, and preferred style of fishing, with setups matched to the conditions of each fishery. Fishing is done from a power drifter in the river portion or an Xpress X21 bay boat on the lake, as well as on foot through wade-fished stretches of river, depending on the water being fished. A valid Montana fishing license is required and can be obtained online through Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks or at local license vendors throughout the state. Guests should dress for variable Montana weather, with layered clothing recommended throughout the season. Lunch is provided during full-day trips, allowing you to relax, refuel, and enjoy the pace of the day on the water.
